Marbled Murrelet (Brachyramphus marmoratus)

Abstract: Marbled murrelets are pigeon-sized seabirds that live along the Pacific coast of North America from California to Alaska. The marbled murrelet is an extremely secretive seabird that nests in older forests and forages in nearby marine waters. They are adapted for both underwater (to pursue prey) and aerial flights. In Washington, they have been seen up to 50 miles from marine water but primarily use suitable habitat within 40 miles of the coast.

“…Statistical tests are given here only when they are not available in the cited references. The multi-authored compendium produced by Ralph et al (1995a) and the more condensed review by Nelson (1997) remain excellent resources, but there has been much ground-breaking research in BC and the U.S. since their publication. This review is therefore an attempt at updating these publications with information relevant to BC.…”

The bulk of the population is found in southern and south-eastern Alaska and BC (see Population Size; sections 3.2 and 3.4 below).…”

“…The Marbled Murrelet (Brachyramphus marmoratus) is a northeastern Pacific seabird that utilizes coastal old-growth forest between southeast Alaska and central California for nesting habitat (Nelson 1997, Burger 2002). The species is classified as "threatened" under the Species at Risk Act in Canada, and southern populations have similar status under the Endangered Species Act in the United States, recently reconfirmed (USFWS 2009).…”
