Marine governance in the English Channel (La Manche): Linking science and management

Abstract: The English Channel is one of the world's busiest sea areas with intense shipping and port activity juxtaposed with recreation, communications and important conservation areas. Opportunities for marine renewable energy vie with existing activities for space. The current governance of the English Channel is reviewed and found to lack integration between countries, sectors, legislation and scientific research. Recent developments within the EU's marine management frameworks are significantly altering our approac… Show more

“…Equation ( 1) is based on fitting a curve to the measurements of over a thousand flow-transverse bedforms [31]. Equation (2) gives an upper bound of H based on the same raw data. Baas [32] gives slightly different values in the form of a vertical form index (or ripple index), given as L/H, for which the most common value is 8-9.…”

“…The North Sea is one of the busiest seas of the world [1], with heavy shipping traffic [2] from major international ports such as Rotterdam, Antwerp, Hamburg, and Bremen. At its southernmost point, it connects to the English Channel at the Dover Strait, which is the busiest shipping lane in the world [3].…”

“…However, they are also some of the most heavily degraded environments as a result of substantial and increasing human pressures, threats and challenges [3][4][5]. This is reflected in the English Channel (known as La Manche in France; hereafter the Channel), an area of high conservation importance and one which contributes to economic prosperity, social well-being and quality of the life [6]. The geographical area of the Channel is defined as having, as its western limit a line from [7].…”

“…more than 20% of the World’s EEZ [ 1 ]. This important sea area offers a significant proportion of marine resources to each member state and contributes to economic prosperity and social well-being [ 2 ]. In order to protect this marine environment in the context of sustainable development [ 3 ], an integrated European marine policy has been developed.…”
