Marine Oil-Degrading Microorganisms and Biodegradation Process of Petroleum Hydrocarbon in Marine Environments: A Review

Abstract: Due to the toxicity of petroleum compounds, the increasing accidents of marine oil spills/leakages have had a significant impact on our environment. Recently, different remedial techniques for the treatment of marine petroleum pollution have been proposed, such as bioremediation, controlled burning, skimming, and solidifying. (Hedlund and Staley in Int J Syst Evol Microbiol 51: [61][62][63][64][65][66] 2001). This review introduces an important remedial method for marine oil pollution treatment-bioremediation… Show more

“…This in turn has increased the probability of oil spills in the oceans 1 . Crude oil can be a serious contaminant in the marine environment 2, 3 . Prior to the DWH oil spill of 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM), few studies investigated the impact of oil contamination in the deep ocean.…”

“…Bioremediation is a useful tool for the treatment of PHC contaminated terrestrial and marine ecosystems (Atlas, 1995; Atlas and Cerniglia, 1995; Almeida et al, 2013; Xue et al, 2015; Scoma et al, 2016; Wang et al, 2016). Accession to PHC substrates while regulating toxic effects is the first hurdle that must be overcome for a microorganism to exploit these energy-rich molecules for growth and energy production.…”

“…Pseudomonas bacteria, are equipped with a genomically-encoded styrene catabolon and represent one of the most versatile organisms engaged in the oxidative metabolism of styrene and related aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons [5, 6]. In our work we have focused on enzymes from the styrene metabolic pathway of P. putida (S12), an unusually solvent tolerant strain.…”
