Marsupial and monotreme milk—a review of its nutrient and immune properties

Abstract: All mammals are characterized by the ability of females to produce milk. Marsupial (metatherian) and monotreme (prototherian) young are born in a highly altricial state and rely on their mother’s milk for the first part of their life. Here we review the role and importance of milk in marsupial and monotreme development. Milk is the primary source of sustenance for young marsupials and monotremes and its composition varies at different stages of development. We applied nutritional geometry techniques to a limit… Show more

“…The prevalence of liver fluke was also higher in female Macropods. Although reasons for this are unclear, age, immune response ( Siddle et al, 2010 ), nutritional stress ( Miller, 1987 ; Brandimarti et al, 2021 ), high energy requirements whilst supporting young ( Stannard et al, 2020 ) and grazing behaviour ( Cripps et al, 2011 ) may all be contributing factors. Female macropods are also philopatric, preferring to stay or return to their place of birth ( Best et al, 2013 ; King and Goldizen, 2016 ), which may increase competition for food and frequency of grazing ‘fluky’ habitats where they exist.…”

“…In marsupials the milk lipid content increases gradually during early lactation, and increases exponentially in late lactation and reaches a peak around weaning. This increase of milk lipid content helps to build up energy reserves for thermoregulation (reviewed in [151]).…”

Recent studies have extended these applications to include word, text and topic analyses to identify emerging topics and gaps in research (Westgate et al 2015, Greenville et al 2017.…”
