MASKING VERSUS REMOVING POINT SOURCES IN CMB DATA: THE SOURCE-CORRECTEDWMAPPOWER SPECTRUM FROM NEW EXTENDED CATALOG

Abstract: In (Scodeller et al.) a new and extended point source catalogue obtained from the WMAP 7-year data was presented. It includes most of the sources included in the standard WMAP 7-year point source catalogues as well as a large number of new detections. Here we study the effects on the estimated CMB power spectrum when taking the newly detected point sources into consideration. We create point source masks for all the 2102 sources that we detected as well as a smaller one for the 665 sources detected in the Q, V… Show more

“…is the geodesic ball on S 2 with center ξ k and radius ρ. The presence of a tolerance parameter is not only required to settle properly the theoretical framework, but is also consistent with the common scientific practice, see again [41], [42]. We introduce now a further condition.…”

“…In the sequel, we let p = 1; all the results below can be trivially extended to choices of other forms of filtering, with different values of p (we stress that the case p = 1 is the choice that has been usually adopted for applications, see [41,42,40]). 4 The multiple testing scheme 4…”

“…The cosmic microwave background (CMB) has offered a significant amount of data with which to understand the processes, conditions and events that make up the earliest epoch of our universe. Among them, measurements of the CMB may be presented as a power spectrum revealing five bell-like curves each describing physical traits of our universe [1]. Nonetheless, after some 30 years, we are uncertain as to what the physical significance is of some of these curves, how they are related, and whether they represent matter, energy or a more complex combination of phenomena.…”

“…32 Therefore, the cleaned-CMB map is much easier to analyze than the masked-CMB map since we do have to handle anymore the point source mask. It provides also a CMB estimation in the mask while inpainting techniques only try to fill the gaps without destroying the statistical properties of the map, and is therefore useful for diffuse emission studies.…”
