Mass Balance of Rhonegletscher During 1882/83–1986/87

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The glaciological investigations on Rhonegletscher were started in 1874. The mass-balance data measured during 1884/ 85-1908/ 09 and during 1979/ 80-1981 / 82 are presented. Two methods are used for estimating the mass changes. During 1882/83-1968/ 69, the cumulative specific net balance is -24 ± 6 m w.e.at the 90% confidence level by the regression model of annual mass balance , annual precipitation, and summer air temperature (the PT model), while the thickness change revealed by the maps is -23 ±… Show more

“…We om itted values interpolated or extrapolated by Chen and Funk (1990), because values for period I were obtained using mass-balance gradients from period 2. We disagree with the interpolation and extrapola ti on techniques used by Chen a nd Funk (1990), because mass-balance gradients may change over time . To achieve m ass-balance gradients (clB/ cl z), we plotted all mass-balance va lues relative to the measured ELA of the yea r in which they were measured (Fig.…”

“…T h e values presented here vary co nsiderably from th ose give n by Chen a nd Funk (1990). DifTerences in mass-bala n ce gra di ents for p eri od I arc a consequence of the interpola ti on an d extrapolati on techni ques used by C hen and Funk (1990).…”
