Mast cells in goldfish (Carassius auratus) gut: Immunohistochemical characterization

Abstract: The common goldfish is the most widespread teleosts in the world. Due to its peculiar characteristics, such as the high resistance, easy availability and stabulation, and for its evolutionary characteristics, this fish lends itself to be one of the most used experimental models. This study aimed to characterize the mast cells in the intestine of Carassius auratus using anti‐TLR‐2, anti‐S100, anti‐VIP, anti‐serotonin (5‐HT) and anti‐Piscidin antibodies. The intestine of goldfish, like that of all vertebrates, p… Show more

“…TLRs, found in all classes of vertebrates [ 47 , 48 , 49 ], are physically and genotypically highly conserved receptors [ 50 , 51 ] that are involved in immune response [ 52 ]. Phylogenetically, TLRs—particularly TLR-2—have been characterized in urochordates (tunica and endostyle of ascidian Styela plicata) [ 53 , 54 ], cartilaginous fishes [ 10 ], bony fishes [ 55 ], and other upper vertebrates [ 48 , 56 ].…”

“…The peroxidase activity of the sections was determined by incubating them in a solution of 0.02% diaminobenzidine (DAB) and 0.015% hydrogen peroxide for 1–5 min at room temperature. [ 58 ]. After being rinsed in PBS, sections were dehydrated, mounted, and viewed with a Zeiss Axioskop 2 plus microscope and a Sony Digital Camera DSC-85.…”

“…Mast cells are related to innate immunity and primarily responsible for acute inflammatory processes [ 132 ]. Once activated, these cells secrete several substances contained in the cytoplasmic granules such as heparin and histamine, nitric oxide (NO), leukotrienes, and interleukins such as IL-8, IL-17, and IL-22 [ 133 , 134 ].…”
