Abstract: The change in the average mast cell number in nonreactional leprosy and leprosy reactions may indicate the important role of mast cells in dynamic changes in the cell-mediated immune response in leprosy and leprosy reactions.

“…TCR γδ-positive skin-tissue cells were counted independently by two persons using an optical microscope (Nikon, Japan) at 400× magnification who were blinded to the parameters of the study [17], [18]. Five fields from each section that did not overlap were randomly selected, and TCR-positive cells were counted and recorded.…”

“…The change in the average mast cell number in nonreactional leprosy and leprosy reactions may indicate the important role of mast cells in dynamic changes in the cellmediated immune response in leprosy and leprosy reactions. 12 We used this mast cell property to determine the mast cell number in skin sections of leprosy and leprosy reactions. The results provide an insight into the role of mast cells as part of the immunologic reaction in leprosy.…”

“…It is likely that while the severe damage persists, mast cells remain scarce. To exemplify this, in leprosy, few mast cell can be recognized within the granulomas whereas in the adjacent interstitium they are abundant [14]. The prominent role of mast cells during early phases of skin inflammation has been clearly demonstrated.…”
