The beaded rim is a commonly applied feature found on plaster ware at the site of Tell Sabi Abyad in North Syria. The plaster ware, also known as white ware, dates back to the Early Pottery Neolithic phase (ca. 6700–6250 cal. BC). A comparison of this plaster ware with the coexisting Neolithic pottery has yielded striking results, showing that beaded rims, commonly found on plaster ware, are rare to absent in the pottery material. This discrepancy between the materials raises questions and urges an investigation into the implications for the further development of the function of containers in Neolithic society. Based on the results of this case study, this paper discusses why the beaded rim is significant on plaster ware, what it may indicate about the manner in which the plaster ware vessel was produced, and its usage and function.
