Materials & Manufacturing Methods selection in product design: Experiences in undergraduate programs

Abstract: This paper presents the results of an exploratory analysis about the existence and nature of 'materials and manufacturing methods' contents into the curricula of product design undergraduate programs in Brazil. Materials selection has great impact on the manufacturing of products and can support more sustainable design. This study is the first phase of a research about the implications of choosing autochthonous materials and traditional manufacturing methods for design of local products and, consequently, addi… Show more

“…A commodity contains cultural factors to be reexamined, spiritual satisfaction in use of a commodity is explored, modern features of innovation are sought through design, and a commodity is commercialized through economic value; these commodities are collectively called “culture-based creative products” (Kim and Bo, 2018; Lin, 2007; Throsby, 2001). Therefore, the difference between “general merchandise” and “culture-based creative products” lies in the function of cultural identification; culture-based creative products are infused with creativity in their production, they also contain intellectual property in cultural form and convey cultural symbolic significance (Aline, Rita, and Lia, 2017). The elements of a culture-based creative product composition include form, color, function, and culture.…”

“…Some scholars have put forward the notion that product design education focuses primarily on material knowledge [79] and material selection and manufacturing methods [46]. Conversely, other studies suggest that wider sustainability factors are beginning to be considered.…”

“…In higher education, it is clear that product design in higher education increasingly focuses on sustainability. Examples include Souza, Almendra, and Krucken [46], who integrated materials and manufacturing methods into product design curricula toward the achievement of sustainability, whilst evidence of multidisciplinary-oriented complex product systems is coming to the fore [86]. Watkins, Casamayor, and Ramirez [37] (p. 12) have also begun to identify the skills and knowledge required in sustainable product design education, whilst Kim has provided insight into the integration of sustainable development goals in a product innovation course [87].…”

“…Several studies existed for traditional manufacturing processes but the study on process selection for AM is still lacking and it is a large domain that must be continued. Different approaches like the flexible decision-making technique [35], TOPSIS-AHPbased method [7], exploratory analysis about existence and nature of manufacturing methods [36], and characteristics of key parts [37] have been used for traditional manufacturing processes.…”
