The present paper addresses the multi-objective optimization of the filling stage of the Resin Infusion manufacturing process. The optimization focuses on the selection of an optimal temperature profile which addresses the tradeoff between filling time and the risk of impeding the flow of resin due to excessive curing. The methodology developed combines a numerical solution of the coupled Darcy's flow and heat conduction problem with a Genetic Algorithm (GA). The methodology converges successfully to a final Pareto set for the case of a C-stiffener which is 130 mm high, 60 mm wide and lies on a skin 280 mm wide. The results highlight the efficiency opportunities available compared to standard industrial manufacturing practice. Reductions in filling time up to 66% and up to 15% in final degree of cure are achieved compared to standard solutions.

Resin infusion (RI) process has been widely used for manufacturing composite parts. The variation of preform thickness brings great difficulty to the three-dimensional simulation of the filling stage. To accurately simulate the preform thickness change and resin flow during resin infusion, precise preform compaction models and dynamically changing geometry models need to be adopted. At present, resin flow is usually considered as two-dimensional and simple compaction models are employed to simplify the simulation, which degrades the prediction accuracy seriously. In this paper, general equations to describe the resin flow in the changing thickness cavity are developed, and the viscoelastic model is adopted which can fully express the dynamic characteristics of the preform compaction. To avoid solving the coupled resin flow/ preform deformation equations directly, the volume of fluid method and the dynamic mesh model are employed to implement the tracking of the flow front and updating of cavity geometry model. The resin storage and release induced by porosity variations are adjusted by a master-slave element method to ensure mass conservation. Two simulation examples are carried out to demonstrate the capability of the above approach. The applicability of the approach on arbitrary complex domains and sequential injection strategy is also verified.

Effect of processing parameters on the fabrication of fiber metal laminates by vacuum infusion process

Fiber metal laminates (FMLs) are hybrid structures made of fibrous composite layers that are located between thin metal layers and joined together by resin. In the current fabrication process, FMLs require prepreg and use of an autoclave or press. This will increase the cost of production and limit the size of the piece to the dimensions of the autoclave or press. Hence, there is an interest in finding methods of construction that are affordable and have no dimensional limitations but also does not reduce the quality of the part. Vacuum infusion is a convenient and economical way to provide high-quality composite components. In this article, the possibility to construct FMLs with this method, as well as the effects of different parameters such as the number of layers, the type of fiber, and the presence of holes in metal layers on the time and quality of parts, is investigated. The fibers used consisted of unidirectional fibers (300 and 600 g/m 2 ), woven, and CFM (300 g/m 2 ). The results show that, increasing the number of fibrous layers, metal sheets or using woven fibers increased the infusion time, and the presence of holes in aluminum layers or using CFM fibers reduced the infusion time. However, the presence of holes in aluminum layers significantly reduces the time of infusion but weakens the mechanical properties of the FMLs. The results of the tensile tests showed that, although the elastic modulus does not change, ultimate strength and fracture strain of the specimen containing holes were 9% and 27% less than the specimen without hole, respectively.
