Materials Used in Electroluminescent Displays

Abstract: The flat-panel-display (FPD) market is experiencing rapid growth due to increased demand for portable computers, communication equipment, and consumer electronic products. In all of these applications, the display is the primary human interface that conveys information. The size of the flat-panel-display market is presently estimated to be $10 billion/year and is projected to grow to over $18 billion/year by 1998. Although most current FPDs utilize either passive- or active-matrix liquid-crystal-display (LCD) … Show more

“…Recently, luminescent properties of inorganic phosphors have been extensively investigated to make flat panel displays more commercially available [1,2]. It is highly desirable to develop novel low-voltage phosphors with high efficiency and chemical stability under electron beam bombardment in a high-vacuum system for next generation field emission displays [3,4].…”

“…In liquid crystal display panels (see below), phosphors serve as a backlighting source excited by ultraviolet light. In electroluminescent (EL) display technology, pixels or a backlighting panel can be excited by electrical current (37)(38)(39)(40)(41). The conditions under which phosphors are required to operate present challenges.…”

“…Therefore, due to its high luminous efficiency, it has received a great importance in the phosphor display industry. This phosphor was combined together with ZnS:Mn, an orange-yellow emitting phosphor, to realize full colour EL panels [16]. However, very few information is available on the precise nature of co-dopants and charge compensator, which influences the luminescent properties of Ce 3+ in the lattice upon excitation [17,18].…”
