Maternal Deaths in the Nordic Countries

Abstract: (Abstracted from Acta Obstet Gynecol Scand 2017;96(9):1112–1119) Underreporting of maternal deaths is a global issue and can hinder the designing and development of preventive and management practices for reducing the maternal mortality ratio (MMR). Although the MMR is among the lowest in the Nordic countries, there is still opportunity to further reduce the rate of direct or indirect maternal deaths.

“…Obstetric hemorrhage is a clinical symptom that may be related to several initial manifestations, including uterine focused AFE, placental abruption, uterine rupture, inversion of the uterus and uterine atony 15 . Although precise diagnosis might be difficult, nearly half of the maternal deaths due to obstetric hemorrhage may be avoided through improvements in medical practices, obstetric care, maternal transport and blood supply systems 8–10,12,23 . The pathophysiology of obstetric hemorrhage may differ among cases.…”

“…When all causes of death were examined, heart diseases, preeclampsia, thromboembolism and suicides were among the first 4 causes. Among the causes of direct obstetric death were preeclampsia and thromboembolism, and indirect obstetric causes of death were heart diseases and suicides in the first place (15). Generally, obstetricians give more importance to preeclampsia and hemorrhage, but they should also pay attention to suicidal events that may occur during pregnancy or postpartum period due to psychiatric problems.…”
