“…The significant role of low-grade inflammation has been confirmed in type 2 diabetes. Due to the similarity between T2DM and GDM, and the association between T2DM and inflammation, it has been hypothesised that inflammation could also be implicated in the pathophysiology of GDM [6,7]. Several studies have examined cytokine production in pregnant women and it has been shown that during pregnancy, the imbalance between the production of anti-inflammatory and pro-inflammatory cytokines may induce low-grade inflammation and insulin resistance [21].…”

“…Recent studies suggest that genetic factors play important role in pathogenesis of GDM [5]. The role of the inflammatory response in the pathogenesis of GDM has been recently investigated [6]. Various inflammatory mediators are considered to be risk factors leading to GDM development [7,8], including cytokines.…”

“…This disorder is associated with several maternal and neonatal complications and may induce the development of type 2 diabetes. Studies suggest that the pathogenesis of GDM is similar to diabetes type 2, where low‐grade inflammation plays a significant role . Genetic polymorphisms associated with inflammatory response are considered as risk factors for diabetes type 2 and GDM .…”

“…Cut‐offs for sugar/artificially sweetened beverages and high dairy intake were set in line with Nordic studies. They show that high intake of these products is associated with high GWG (Hrolfsdottir et al, ; Olafsdottir et al, ; Renault et al, ) and adverse birth outcomes (Englund‐Ogge et al, ; Olsen et al, ; Zhu et al, )…”
