Maternal Micronutrient Deficiencies and Related Adverse Neonatal Outcomes after Bariatric Surgery: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Pregnant and postpartum women with a history of bariatric surgery are at risk of micronutrient deficiencies as a result of the combination of physiologic changes related to pregnancy and iatrogenic postoperative alterations in the absorption and metabolism of crucial nutrients. This systematic review investigates micronutrient deficiencies and related adverse clinical outcomes in pregnant and postpartum women after bariatric surgery. A systematic approach involving critical appraisal was conducted independentl… Show more

“…Similar to animal studies, both decreases and increases in RA signaling are associated with congenital craniofacial, ear, and ocular anomalies in humans (Gitton et al, 2010;Lampert et al, 2003;Sandell et al, 2007). (Akhtar et al, 2013;Jans et al, 2015;West, 2003;Zile, 1998).…”

“…These negative outcomes include an increased risk for abnormal glucose kinetics and hypoglycemia during pregnancy (17), increased risk for miscarriage (20), small-for-gestational age babies (SGA) or intrauterine growth restricted infants (IUGR) (2, 19, 38), birth at a reduced gestational age (20, 27), preterm birth (19, 51) and still-birth or neonatal death (21, 27). These adverse events may be due to maternal micronutrient deficiencies following surgical weight loss or the timing of pregnancy with respect to the bariatric surgery (24, 33). To date, however, there are no conclusive data to support these hypotheses.…”
