Abstract: The maternity blues is the most commonly observed puerperal mood disturbance. In Italy, the mother's daily affective experience after childbirth has not yet been published. During each of the first 15 days after the birth of the child, 36 primipara women completed the Kellner Symptoms Questionnaire (SQ) and the Profile of Mood States (POMS). “…Each used different tools (PHQ and SRQ) to measure postnatal depression and these have different sensitivities and specificities to the EPDS. Further, except for the two studies conducted in the Sodo district [24,25], the studies defined postnatal depression irrespective of the time since delivery, thereby potentially over-estimating the prevalence since mild depression and mood swings (baby blues) are very common in the first two weeks after delivery [59][60][61].…”

The prevalence of postpartum depression in the general population has been estimated to vary from 10% to 20% 9–16.…”

“…298 The Symptom Questionnaire has been validated and found to be highly sensitive in detecting irritability in populations characterized by subclinical affective symptoms. 298,324 Internal consistency was good in previous studies 298,325 and at our baseline assessment (Cronbach's α = 0.87). To provide insight into the variability of irritability within and between women, both within-person coefficient of variation ([personal standard deviation (SD) irritability scores visit 1 to 9 / personal mean irritability scores visit 1 to 9 ]*100%) and between-person coefficient of variation 135 ([population SD irritability scores visit 1 to 9 / population mean irritability scores visit 1 to 9 ]*100%) were calculated.…”
