Matgéné: A Program to Develop Job-Exposure Matrices in the General Population in France

Abstract: Initial Matgéné JEMs results are in agreement with the French and international literature, thus validating the methodology. Exposure estimates precision, however, vary between agents and according to the amount of exposure measurement data available. These JEMs are important epidemiological tools, and improving their quality will require investment in occupational health data harvesting, especially in the case of low-level exposures.

“…The control group was a random sample of the population of these areas and the distribution of socioeconomic characteristics was also similar to their distribution in the general population. Moreover, lifelong exposure prevalences among women controls were of the same order of magnitude as those estimated among women in the general population for the solvents under study 33. Distribution by age, sex and cancer site of the head and neck cancer cases included in ICARE was similar to that observed for head and neck cancer cases in all of France.…”

“…Furthermore, the JEMs used are not gender specific. The construction of the JEMs33 was based primarily on knowledge acquired from men, and misclassification may be more frequent among women. However, this type of bias cannot explain positive findings.…”

“…More than 600 000 jobs held by the CONSTANCES participants are expected. Coded job histories allow for linkage with available job-exposure matrices (JEMs) developed by the Occupational Health Department of the National Institute for Health Surveillance in the Matgene project 39. Available JEMs concern chlorinated solvents, fuels and petroleum solvents, asbestos, mineral wool fibres (glass, rock, slag), refractory ceramic fibres, dust flour, leather dust, respirable dust of free crystalline silica, respirable cement dust; other JEMs are under development (noise, biomechanical factors) and will be used when they become available.…”

“…Their use has since decreased in response to various factors, including increasing knowledge pertaining to their toxicity and environmental impact [14]. Several chlorinated solvents are known or suspected carcinogens.…”
