Mathematical Modeling of a Nickel‐Cadmium Battery: Effects of Intercalation and Oxygen Reactions

Abstract: Extensions are presented for a previously published (1) mathematical model of a nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) cell. These extensions consist of intercalation thermodynamics for the nickel electrode and oxygen generation and reduction reactions during charge and overcharge. The simulated results indicate that intercalation may be important in the nickel electrode and that including the oxygen reactions provides a means of predicting the efficiency of the cell on charge and discharge.

“…This implies that in electrochemical systems that exhibit hysteresis, the potential cannot be used as a means of estimating the SOC. In addition, relating z to the ratio of the activities of the oxidized and reduced species, 32 and in turn relating them to the potential using Nernstian thermodynamics, [13][14][15] would not be appropriate for such systems. Figure 6 shows the boundary curves and the discharge scanning curves for the nickel hydroxide electrode.…”

“…Both show an increasing trend as the surface closest to the anode is approached (i.e., bed depth approaching zero), because the overpotential is highest at this surface. [18][19][20][21] show similar comparisons for the nitrate system. The kinetic parameters used are shown in Table 4.…”
