Matrix Crack Networks in SiC/SiC Composites: In-Situ Characterisation and Metrics

Abstract: Ceramic matrix composites can offer clear potential for a variety of engineering applications where the temperature capabilities of conventional metals are exceeded. Continued mechanical characterisation is essential to gain an understanding of their associated damage and failure mechanisms across a wide range of representative temperatures. The present paper will report ongoing research to characterize the initiation of matrix cracking at room temperature under tensile stress and subsequent damage development… Show more

“…The crack opening behavior in CMCs depends on the peak stress level, matrix cracking and also fiber’s volume in the composite. 36 In this section, using the developed micromechanicao models considering interface wear effect, Ψ COD and related damage parameters (e.g., Φ IDR , Ψ AFD , and Ψ AMD ) versus cycle number curves for different fiber volume fraction, matrix crack spacing, and fatigue peak stress are analyzed.…”

“…32-35 The interface property of the frictional shear stress between the fiber and the matrix degrades, which reduce the load transfer capacity between the fiber and the matrix and affects the crack opening displacement (COD). 36 For the fatigue damaged CMCs, a unit cell is extracted from the composite system considering damage mechanisms, e.g., matrix cracking and interface debonding and wear, as shown in Figure 1.

“…The crack opening behavior is different for different cracking locations in the 2D PW CMCs. 29 At elevated temperature, after the occurrence of matrix cracking, the opening of matrix cracks would ingress the oxygen or oxidative atmosphere inside of the composite, leading to the oxidation of the fiber and the interphase. 30 Understanding the crack opening behavior in CMCs is much more important for the durability and reliability analysis of CMCs' components during operation.…”

“…Compared with other non-destructive measurement devices that only give access to surface information [e.g. in situ optical or electronic microscopy tests (Jordan et al, 2021)] or partial volume information [e.g. acoustic emission (Maillet et al, 2019)], X-ray computed micro-tomography (CT) provides highly spatially resolved volumetric information.…”
