Maxillary and mandibular unusually large radicular cyst: A rare case report

Abstract: Radicular cysts are the most common odontogenic cyst. It is an inflammatory cyst associated with the root apex of a nonvital tooth. Most radicular cysts are small but can reach a large size causing displacement of surrounding structures. Here, we present a rare case of huge radicular cyst in both maxilla and mandible in a 36-year-old patient.

“…Radicular cysts are quite small (5-15 mm) and commonly found into the maxilla. Only in case of infection or functional impairment they require surgical treatment [2]. In our patients we found a 33.7 mm radicular cyst-much larger than the usual range-originating from incisive and occupying almost entirely the maxilla (Figs.…”

“…Displacement of the adjacent teeth and root resorption of the affected teeth have also been reported. 4 There are chances of transformation of radicular cyst into squamous cell carcinoma associated with long standing cases, but there was no histopathological evidence of epithelial dysplasia in our case [5] . Cystic lesions are most commonly treated pathologies via surgeries.…”

“…5 An average size of the radicular cyst can range between 0.5 to 1.5 cm. 6 However, large radicular cysts with the measurement reaching up to 5.0-10 cm have also been reported in various studies. [7][8][9] As the size of the lesion increases, the surrounding alveolar bone usually becomes very thin due to subperiosteal bone deposition.…”

“…There has been evidence of bone‐resorbing factors such as receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa‐B ligand and osteoprotegerin, which have a role in facilitating the cystic expansion 5 . An average size of the radicular cyst can range between 0.5 to 1.5 cm 6 . However, large radicular cysts with the measurement reaching up to 5.0‐10 cm have also been reported in various studies 7‐9 .…”
