Maximizing the value of customer-sited PV systems using storage and controls

Abstract: This paper determines how the value of customer-sited PV can be increased with battery storage by enhancing the load management and outage protection attributes of PV. Case studies in San Jose, CA and Long Island, NY for residential and commercial PV applications are used for a quantitative illustration of storage value enhancement. Results indicate that: (1) a small amount of storage for local load control and a larger amount of storage for emergency load protection significantly increases the value of distri… Show more

“…The relationship of ρ c and ρ 0 e can be obtained according to Equation (5) and be briefly expressed by Equation (6). Since the fixed cost of the BESS is recovered by the capacity price ρ c and the fixed and variable costs of PV systems and other parts are recovered by the benchmark electricity price ρ 0 e , therefore, once the ratio of the electrical capacity charge in the total economic income is determined, the capacity price ρ c and the benchmark electricity price ρ 0 e can also be obtained accordingly.…”

“…Other studies more focused on PV system design were also conducted. [4] examined the controls and storage necessary for optimization of PV systems. The common conclusion to all of these studies is that more research needs to be conducted to further determine the effects of higher penetrations of DRs.…”
