AIM: Cornus mas L is commonly used due to its anti-infl ammatory, anti-carcinogenic and anti-oxidant properties. In the study, the effects of C. mas L extract on a solid tumor were examined in the Ehrlich solid tumor model developed in Balb/C type mice. METHODS: Ehrlich acid tumor (EAT) cells (1x10 6 EAT cell) from the stock animal were injected subcutaneously (s.c.) through the nape of the mice. Treatment groups of solid tumor-induced animals received 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg of C. mas L extract intraperitoneally (i.p.) for 14 days. RESULTS: Tumor volumes and animal weights were found to be statistically signifi cant compared to the control group (p < 0.05). AgNOR staining was performed in tumor tissues. Statistically signifi cant differences were observed between the groups in terms of TAA/NA ratio (p < 0.05). Immunohistochemical and biochemical parameters were also evaluated. An estimation of tumor proliferation of the lung, liver, brain, kidney, testis and tumor antioxidant parameters viz. lipid peroxidation, reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione S-transferase (GST), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) was made. CONCLUSIONS: Our study showed that the anti-tumor effect of C. mas L in assisted tumor development with EAT cells, was mediated by the enhancement of oxidative stress with multiple mechanisms (Tab. 6, Fig. 12, Ref. 38).

Objective To investigate whether argyrophilic nucleolar organizing region-associated protein (AgNOR) parameters can be used as a biomarker that could potentially help with the management and clinical prognosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbation. Methods This case-control study enrolled patients with COPD who were admitted to the Emergency Department and healthy sex- and age-matched control subjects. Peripheral blood samples were collected at hospital admission and the peripheral lymphocytes were silver-stained to investigate the quantity and distribution of AgNOR proteins. Fifty nuclei per patient were viewed and the total AgNOR area/total nuclear area (TAA/TNA) ratio and the mean AgNOR number for each patient were calculated. Results A total of 20 patients with COPD exacerbation and 17 healthy control subjects were recruited to the study. The TAA/TNA ratio and the mean AgNOR number were significantly higher in the patients with COPD exacerbation compared with the healthy control subjects. The mean AgNOR number showed a positive correlation with the pCO levels on admission. Conclusion AgNOR protein levels were elevated during a COPD exacerbation compared with healthy control subjects and there was a positive correlation between pCO levels and mean AgNOR number.

DOI: 10.9775/kvfd.2017 AbstractThe treatment of cancer is highly challenging and contains surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy alone or combinations which have various side effects on the patient health. This study aimed at observing the possible antineoplastic activity of AK27-herbal mixture, a combination of pistachio resin, rhus resin, pollen, Nigella sativa seed, pomegranate skin and olive oil, on experimentally induced Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) in a mouse model. EAC-bearing mice were evaluated by tumor cell count (viable and non-viable), median survival time, percentage increase in the life span and live body weight changes up to 30 days of EAC inoculation. Volume of EAC cells and viable cell count were found to be significantly decreased in AK27 treated groups when compared to EAC control group (P<0.01). The highest viable cell count (mean 15.5x10 7 /mL/mouse) and EAC volume (average 12 mL/mouse) was measured in the cancer group. Administration of AK27 mixture before tumor challenge prevented the EAC development whereas simultaneous administration or after tumor initiation, AK27 significantly reduced the number of viable EAC cells with respect to cancer control group. After the 4th day onwards until the 12th day significant differences were observed between groups in terms of live body weight (P<0.001). All animals in cancer control group died within 12 days as expected. Mean life span in AK27 treated groups were varied from 24 to 26 days with percentage increase in life span of from 100 to 150. The present study demonstrated that AK27-compound was exhibited promising antitumor efficacy in EAC bearing mice. EAK'lı fareler tümör hücre sayısı (canlı ve ölü), ortalama yaşam süresi, yaşam süresinde yüzde artış ve canlı ağırlık değişimi yönünden değerlendirildi.
