Mean platelet volume change (∆MPV) and red blood cell distribution width (RDW) as promising markers of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) outcome

Abstract: Background: Prognostic markers play an essential role in the proper management of community-acquired pneumonia. This research work aimed to evaluate the association of RDW and /or MPV with mortality and morbidity in patients with CAP to improve the yield of already used prognostic scores. Results: The current study enrolled 153 patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Out of them, 101 (64%) patients improved while 52 (36%) died. It was noticed that each of delta MPV and RDW (P < 0.001) had positive si… Show more

“…24 In a study evaluating 153 hospitalized patients with communityacquired pneumonia, increased RDW and MPV values were associated with high mortality. 25 Similarly, in our study, both RDW and MPV values were significantly higher in patients with mortality and the MPV value was significantly higher in patients with acute hypercapnic respiratory failure. Although the RDW value was higher in patients with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure, the difference was statistically insignificant.…”

“…[7] A study conducted on CAP patients found a significant relationship between RDW and MPV levels and high mortality risk. [19] In our study, however, RDW, MPV, ALB, CRP, and PCT levels were not noted as significant predictors of 90-day mortality. Other studies have mostly evaluated CAP patients, and to the best of our knowledge, there is little documentation on the relationship between these serum markers and long-term independent mortality in HAP patients.…”
