Measurement and Evaluation of Electric Field Strength Levels in Primary and Secondary Schools in a Pilot Region

Abstract: In this study, in order to evaluate the exposed radiofrequency electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) levels, and to control their compliance with the limits determined by International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), extensive short-term/band-selective and long-term RF-EMF measurements were conducted at 92 primary and secondary schools in the Ilkadım district of Samsun/Turkey. The measurements were performed once each in May, June, October and December in 2016, using the PMM-8053 EMF meter. … Show more

“…In a recent study by Kurnaz et al [53] extensive short-term/band-selective and long-term RF-EMF measurements were conducted at 92 primary and secondary schools in Turkey, in May, June, October and December, 2016. The short-term/band-selective measurements lasted 6 min in each point, while, after completing broadband and bandselective measurements, 24 h of E measurements were taken at the school with the highest average electric field strength (E avg ).…”

“…For example, the Selective Radiation Meters, viz. SRM-3000™ and SRM-3006™ (Narda Safety Test Solutions GmbH, Pfullingen, Germany) have been widely used in RF-EMF exposure assessments [47][48][49][50][51]. These handheld spectrum analysers are capable of monitoring a number of frequency bands for RF-EMF exposure assessment from a variety of technologies.…”

“…However, we have not included them into this paper due to their limited applications as noted in the scientific literature. Table 2 only includes the latest versions of the tools we reviewed in our previous publication [14] or the others radiation meters (e.g., SRM models) that have been described in the literature elsewhere [47][48][49][50][51].…”

“…is based on the emission of electromagnetic fields (EMFs). Thus, an unavoidable EMF radiation is present in the surrounding environment, raising concerns on potential adverse effects on human health [1]- [5]. For that reason, recommendations for limiting exposure to EMF have been defined in "Guidelines for Limiting Exposure on Time-varying Electric, Magnetic and Electromagnetic Fields (up to 300 GHz)", which was published in 1998, by International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) [6].…”
