Measurement of basic characteristics and gain uniformity of a triple GEM detector

Abstract: a b s t r a c tLarge area Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors have been the preferred choice for tracking devices in major nuclear and particle physics experiments. Uniformity over surface of the detector in terms of gain, energy resolution and efficiency is crucial for the optimum performance of these detectors. In the present work, detailed performance study of a 10 Â 10 cm 2 triple GEM detector operated using Ar and CO 2 gas mixtures in proportions of 70:30 and 90:10, has been made by making a voltage s… Show more

“…Here we present the results of our finding in terms of the effective gain, energy resolution and efficiency measurements with Ar/CO 2 90:10 and 70:30 gas mixtures. The results obtained in this study will also be compared with our triple GEM results [28,29]. The effect of the drift field (E d ) on the gain variations and time resolution are also studied in detail.…”

“…Use of multiple GEM foils has several advantages, including the possibility of achieving larger gain values, in comparison to single GEM detectors. The readout of the detector is made up of 256 strips running across both X and Y plane, from where 128 strips are shorted to get a test pulse [10]. The present studies have been performed with a double and triple GEM setups, with 4.5, 2, 1.5 and 3, 1, 2, 1 mm drift to induction gaps, respectively.…”
