“…In published studies, the effects of the AR antagonists 7-MX and caffeine on ChT are controversial. In contrast to the thickening of the choroid observed in monkeys after 7-MX intake, a thinned choroid was observed in humans from 30 min to 4 h after oral intake of caffeine [49], another AR antagonist.…”

“…However, it is unlikely that the effect of that diurnal variation seriously affected the conclusions of the present study because the maximum likely diurnal variation is only about 10% of the choroidal thickness (Tan et al 2012). However, the maximum likely variations of the choroidal thickness due to these factors have been reported to be <10% of the choroidal thickness (Kim et al 2013a;Hong et al 2014;Altinkaynak et al 2015). IOP = intraocular pressure.…”

“…Furthermore, the SS-OCT was performed in the afternoon between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. in all subjects to minimize any potential effect of diurnal variation. The choroidal thickness could also be affected by medication (Kim et al 2013a), caffeine (Altinkaynak et al 2015) and exercise (Hong et al 2014), which were not included in the analysis of the current study. However, the maximum likely variations of the choroidal thickness due to these factors have been reported to be <10% of the choroidal thickness (Kim et al 2013a;Hong et al 2014;Altinkaynak et al 2015).…”

“…[37][38][39] The impact of persistent choroidal swelling on the surrounding tissues in the ONH thus merits further investigation, particularly since the choroid is a dynamic tissue that is responsive to multiple stimuli, including pharmacological and positional challenges among others. [40][41][42][43][44] Importantly, our findings illustrate the strong importance of choroidal anatomy on ONH biomechanics. This point was made both by direct comparison between our two models (blunt versus tapered choroid) and in the subsequent sensitivity analysis, which was also consistent with previous results on nonchoroidal factors, 13 giving us confidence in the model.…”
