Measurement of inclusiveπ0production in the charged-current interactions of neutrinos in a 1.3-GeV wide band beam

Abstract: In this paper we report on the measurement of the rate of inclusive π 0 production induced by charged-current neutrino interactions in a C8H8 target at a mean energy of 1.3 GeV in the K2K near detector. Out of a sample of 11,606 charged current neutrino interactions, we select 479 π 0 events with two reconstructed photons. We find that the cross section for the inclusive π 0 production relative to the charged-current quasi-elastic cross section isThe energy dependent cross section ratio is also measured. The r… Show more

“…The near detector complex is consisted of multiple detectors, including 1 kton water Cherenkov detector and the vertex detector of the plastic scintillation fiber tracker "SciFi" 1 [69] which was later replaced with the extruded plastic scintillator tracker "SciBar" [70]. Although data from the water Cherenkov detector (H 2 O) was important for the oscillation physics [71], most of the neutrino interaction data are from tracker measurements [72][73][74]. Among them, SciBar analysis demonstrates that the measurement of energy deposits around the interaction vertex, the so called "vertex activity", is a useful variable, especially to select coherent scattering events [75].…”

“…Resonant pion production can be larger than its coherent counterpart and is modelled in GENIE by the Rein-Sehgal model [68]. Its CC version was measured by MiniBooNE [60], K2K [69], MINOS [32], and MINERνA [30]. In the latter measurement one can clearly see the large number of events with undetected protons.…”

“…The energy dependence of these effects is the same between CC and NC production. While ν μ CC with an associated π 0 has been previously studied on deuterium by bubble chamber experiments [5][6][7][8], on freon [9], and on carbon [10][11][12][13], it has never been measured on heavier targets. This article reports the first measurement of ν μ CC single π 0 production on argon using an inclusive final-state topology of at least one photon coming from a π 0 decay in addition to a muon, both exiting the target nucleus.…”
