Measurement of responses to suggestions for relaxation by means of indirect and direct tests

Abstract: First, some analytic characterizations of suggestibility as well as a brief summary of recent developments of tests and scales for suggestibility without hypnosis are provided. Following that summary, an empirical study on the development of a relaxation tool both for induction and measurement is described that does not make use of the terms 'suggestion' and 'hypnosis'. The objective was to measure suggestibility and relaxation that may correlate to these two approaches. This instrument consists of indirect mo… Show more

“…Suggestibility can be defined also in nonhypnotic terms. For instance, sensory suggestibility refers to an individual's tendency to be suggestible to perceptual experiences [13][14][15] . Sensory suggestibility has been previously studied in the context of the rubber hand 12 .…”

“…To do this, we applied the sensory suggestibility scale (SSS) at the end of the experimental procedure [13][14][15] . The SSS score is a measure of indirect suggestibility in which the intention to influence remains concealed, with the participant unaware that her sensory suggestibility is going to be tested 16 .…”

“…A precondition for suggestibility to emerge is a context of ambiguity or uncertainty, in which an individual’s sensory perception can be easily influenced [22, 24]. With regard to the RHI, the artificial hand can be thought of as a suggestive stimulus [11] and the context appears to be characterized by the ambiguity and uncertainty of the source of information.…”

“…Por su parte, Gheorghiu y Molz (2008), estudiaron a 177 sujetos (10-21 años de edad, Universidad de Giessen, Alemania) en grupos de 8 a10 estudiantes en sesiones de 40 a 50 minutos para medir la relajación y sugestión. Se aplicaron la relajación y flexión y, masajes en los músculos del cuello en posición sentado sobre una silla con la espalda erguida (con libre movimiento de la cabeza).…”
