Measurement of the placental total antioxidant status in preeclamptic women using a novel automated method

Abstract: Our results support the concept that placental defective response to an oxidant stimulus plays a central role in the etiopathogenesis of preeclampsia by using the novel automated Erel method.

“…Likewise, TOS may indicate the level of all free oxidant radicals caused by diabetes-related oxidative stress. In order to determine oxidative/anti-oxidative balance, TAS and TOS methods have been developed in various biological samples [20,21]. In this study, we studied total oxidant and antioxidant status at the same time to more accurately assess oxidative stress.…”

“…The color intensity, which can be measured spectrophotometrically, is related to the total amount of oxidant molecules present in the sample. The assay is calibrated with hydrogen peroxide, and the results are expressed in terms of nanomoles of H 2 O 2 equivalent/milligram of protein [20]. The units of TOS and TAS were micromoles of H 2 O 2 equivalent/gram protein and millimole of H 2 O 2 equivalents/gram protein, respectively.…”

“…The color intensity, which can be measured spectrophotometrically, is related to the total amount of oxidant molecules present in the sample. The assay is calibrated with hydrogen peroxide, and the results are expressed in terms of nmol H 2 O 2 equivalent/mg protein [20]. The TOS level to TAS level ratio was regarded as the oxidative stress index (OSI).…”
