Measurement of the Plastic Viscosity and Yield Point of Drilling Fluids

Abstract: Rheological parameters of drilling fluids, such as yield point and plastic viscosity, are required to determine the hydrodynamic components of pressure at various points in the circulation system during technological operations. It is essential to ensure a simple and accurate measurement of these parameters in the construction of oil and gas wells, however, existing methods are relatively expensive and the results obtained can be subjective. This article describes a newly developed method for measuring the pla… Show more

“… 85 On the other hand, YP and GS refer to the attraction force between particles. YP is also defined as yield stress (YS), which is the minimum shear stress required to initiate flow of a fluid and provides unique information about the capacity to carry drilling cuttings in suspension during the circulation in the wellbore, 86 while GS is related to the capability to solidify. 87 Therefore, GS is associated with the thixotropy of the DFs formulation.…”

“…It is the ability to carry drill cuttings in suspension while circulating in the wellbore and out of the annulus. Hence, drilling problems such as differential sticking can be prevented [ 27 ]. According to Maiti et al, as the solid additive particles reduce in size, the YP increases [ 28 ].…”

“…Generally, the marsh funnel device required little equipment, easy or simple to operate and quick or fast in measurement of drilling fluid viscosity [Chandan, 2013, Fann Instrument Company, 2013, Friedrich, 1941Delikesheva, et al, 2020] The funnel is made of break-resistant plastic and has a permanent outlet or orifice with quantify diameter (Friedrich, 1941) and have two sectional design; cone and tube. The marsh funnel simple measure the viscosity of drilling mud by taking record of time it flow from the cone and through the orifice tube (1500ml) into a graduated cup capacity of 946 cubic centimeters and recorded in seconds as a measure of viscosity of mud.…”
