At times, the dissertation process can seem like a long walk down a lonely road. I am thankful to the people who have supported, encouraged, and mentored me-who perhaps unknowingly made this journey possible. First and foremost, I would like to thank my dissertation committee-for their willingness to serve and for their unending patience. A special thanks goes to my advisor and mentor, Dr. Catherine Welch, for her guidance and support. She has been pivotal to my success and I have been profoundly affected by her example both personally and professionally. Thank you to Dr. Stephen Dunbar for pushing me forward when at times during this process I seemed stuck. His ability to help me navigate through the muck is much of the reason I am on the other side of this endeavor. He was able to point me in the right direction, but always allowed me to find my own answers. Thank you to Dr. Don Yarbrough for continually finding the time to discuss my research, my concerns, or anything else that seemed a roadblock to my success. He has always believed in my potential. And, he is perhaps one of the most knowledgeable people I have ever had the privilege to learn from, both in class and at the CEA. A special thanks to all of those who took time to stop and talk, inquire about progress, help to develop code, or provide comic relief. You made the long days bearable. To my family-thank you for your unwavering support. Thank you for believing I would finish, even when I was not so sure. Lastly, to my husband. Thank you for holding my hand as I navigated this long road, for embarking on this journey with me, and waiting patiently for it to come to an end. I truly could not have done this without you.
