Purpose: Our aims were to: 1) describe participation in people with Parkinson disease (PD), 2) evaluate the relationship between quality of life and participation, and 3) determine which mobility measures predict participation. Methods:Participants with idiopathic PD (n=62) were tested off medication for participation (Activity Card Sort), quality of life (PDQ-39), disease severity (MDS-UPDRS), and mobility (Berg Balance Scale, Five Time Sit to Stand (FTSTS) , Six Minute Walk, forward walking velocity, dual-task walking velocity, andFreezing of Gait Questionnaire (FOGQ)). Relationships of all variables to participation were examined using Pearson correlations. Subsequent regression analysis was employed to determine which mobility measures best predicted participation. Results:Participants with PD retained, on average, 78.3% (SD = 15.6%) of total activities. Participation was negatively correlated with all PDQ-39 domains (r range -.36 to .-78, all p < 0.005) with the mobility domain having the strongest correlation. All mobility measures were significantly correlated with participation, with the final regression model including only FTSTS and FOGQ which combined explained 37% of the variance in participation.Conclusions: Participation is highly related to mobility-related QOL and may be most impacted by ability to stand up from a chair and freezing of gait in those with PD.

Participation is an indicator of healthy functioning and well-being, as emphasized by the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (World Health Organization, 2001). The Activity Card Sort (ACS) is a valid and reliable assessment tool that measures participation. This study describes the process of developing the Arab heritage version of the ACS (A-ACS). The original ACS was translated to Arabic using World Health Organization forward-backward translation guidelines, and activities that are common in Arab cultures were nominated using the ACS investigators' guidelines. Participant respondents were 156 Jordanians, from different age groups and socioeconomic classes. The process initially yielded 179 activities common to all international versions of the ACS, 19 of which were unique to the Arab culture. Eighty-eight items were validated for the A-ACS. The A-ACS validated in this study is the first assessment tool, for Arab adults whose heritage is in the Middle-East and North Africa, that measures participation. We expect the tool to have excellent clinical utility not only in Arab countries, but also for immigrants and citizens of Arab origins worldwide.

The Activity Card Sort (ACS) is a widely used measure for assessing participation in instrumental, leisure, and social-cultural activities. The ACS addresses previous and current activities but not future activity plans. The purpose of the study was to extend the ACS to include future planning. Previous research indicates that participation in activities and future planning is positively related to life satisfaction, and increased well-being and that these positive effects were most pronounced for adults 60 years and older. The current study participants were 60 Israeli adults aged 55 -74 years. The research finds future planning to be widespread, common and significant among older adults. Moreover, it was found that older people planned to continue previous activities more that they planned new activities for the future, indicating more continuity than innovation among the participants in this study. Participants with higher current or past activity levels planed a greater number of future activities. Construct validity using known group method showed the extended ACS to have discriminant validity with respect to age (younger participants were more active) and gender (highly physical activities were favored by men). MANOVA repeated measures and Pearson correlations demonstrated moderate-high test-retest reliability for the extended ACS.
