Measuring core temperature using the proprietary application and thermo-smartphone adapter

Abstract: Fast and accurate measurement of core body temperature is crucial for accidental hypothermia treatment. We have developed a novel light and small adapter to the headset jack of a mobile phone based on Android. It has been applied to measure temperature and set up automatic notifications (e.g. Global Positioning System coordinates to emergency services dispatcher, ECMO coordinator). Its validity was confirmed in comparison with Vital Signs Monitor Spacelabs Healthcare Elance 93300 as a reference method, in a se… Show more

“…Having a reliable measurement or estimate of a patient’s core temperature is important since some critical decisions are based on the temperature value [13, 14]. This is notably the case regarding the withholding of defibrillation after an initial three shocks in a CA patient with a temperature < 30 °C [3], the interruption in chest compressions in some selected CA patients with a temperature < 28 °C [3, 15], or the transport of non-arrested patients with a temperature < 28 °C directly to an ECLS (Extracorporeal Life Support) centre [2, 3, 11].…”

“…Despite the well-established and acknowledged importance of temperature to guide the management of potentially hypothermic patients, it has been shown in many different setting and countries that suitable thermometers, notably low-reading thermometers, are often lacking [13, 14, 1620]. Obtaining an accurate temperature measurement in the prehospital setting is also subject to some limits, including in conscious patients [19, 21, 22].…”

“…More recently, the digital equivalent was launched, a smartphone-based thermometer developed in Poland, which can be connected to standard esophageal or epitympanic temperature probes. An affordable breakthrough, this technology is complete with software enabled to send notifications automatically to EMS dispatcher as well as to ECLS center (Darocha et al, 2016b ).…”

“…Therefore, cost-effective tools are needed to estimate the solar irradiance especially in the preliminary design stages. Recently, smartphones (smart devices) have not only served in communications and media, but also have been used for multiple scientific purposes such as teaching [10,11], medical care [12,13], environment [14] and agriculture [15]. The broad range of applications for smart devices comes from the different sensors embedded in them, such as an accelerometer, a digital compass, a gyroscope, a global positioning system (GPS), a microphone and a camera.…”
