Measuring fatigue in sarcoidosis: The Fatigue Assessment Scale (FAS)

Abstract: Fatigue is a major problem in a wide range of diseases including sarcoidosis. However, there is no standard measure for assessing fatigue. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the usefulness of the Fatigue Assessment Scale (FAS) in two samples of sarcoidosis patients. Sample 1 included 1 046 members of the Dutch Sarcoidosis Society and Sample 2 consisted of 80 sarcoidosis patients of the outpatient clinic of the Sarcoidosis Management Centre Maastricht, the Netherlands. All patients complete… Show more

“…Different effects of prednisolone have been previously documented in the literature. 25 According to Drent et al, 4 prednisolone may induce muscle weakness, leading to a collapse of upper airway muscles and therefore yielding fatigue. Whether this direct effect of prednisolone increases fatigue in patients with sarcoidosis or the higher activity of disease, which makes the treatment with prednisolone necessary, is not quite clear and should be considered in further investigations.…”

“…An assessment of overall organ involvement, extrapulmonary physician organ severity tool (ePOST) [36], was performed at each visit, using all information available to the physician. Patients also completed several additional patient reported outcomes (PRO) questionnaires, including the 36-item short form health survey (SF-36) [37], the Fatigue Assessment Scale (FAS) [38], the sarcoidosis assessment tool (SAT) [39], and a patient global assessment (PGA) of overall wellbeing on a visual analogue scale. An Independent Data Monitoring Committee reviewed all available data after the 15th randomised patient had completed the week-16 visit and, periodically, thereafter.…”

“…Although these two aspects of fatigue are represented in the questionnaire, the FAS was unidimensional when completed by a Dutch working population and a representative group of the general population [19,20], as well as in sarcoidosis patients [10,21]. The unidimensional structure indicates that the FAS total score should be used.…”

“…Scores on the FAS range from 10 to 50. The psychometric properties are good in Dutch healthy individuals and sarcoidosis patients [10,20,21]. In the BC patients, Cronbach's alpha internal consistency was 0.88, in the BBP group 0.92.…”
