Measuring local competitiveness: comparing and integrating two methods PCA and AHP

Abstract: This article discusses two methods to measure the concept of local competitiveness: Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). The goal of this analysis is to determine whether these two methods used in social sciences research lead to comparable model results. By non-parametric tests we show that there is a significant correlation between the PCA and AHP local competitiveness indexes. Thereafter, a developed mixed method examination of whether the methods can be used interchang… Show more

“…In this way, determining the weight can better reflect the objectivity and rationality, and the calculation is more standardized, which is convenient for realization on the computer. The popularity of AHP is due to its simplicity, flexibility, ease of use, and interpretability 29,30 . AHP is a multi-objective, multi-criteria decision-making method capable of organizing, analyzing and solving complex decision-making problems 31 .…”

“…Mediante pruebas no paramétricas se demostró que existe una correlación significativa entre los índices de competitividad local (PCA) y AHP. Los dos métodos utilizados en la investigación de las ciencias sociales conducen a resultados del modelo comparables (Kurek et al, 2022).…”

“…These methods initially have some fuzziness, and cannot clearly and quantitatively determine the effects of individual driving factors of LULC. Secondly, when dividing the weight of various factors, the subjectivity is too strong to objectively ascertain the optimal weight ratio [28,29]. Knowledge gaps exist in quantitatively exploring the drivers of LULC formation and its change in endorheic river basins.…”
