Measuring the efficiency of the healthcare sector in Poland – a window-DEA evaluation

Abstract: PurposeThe main aim of the study was to measure and assess the efficiency of the healthcare system in Poland.Design/methodology/approachAn output-oriented Data Envelopment Analysis model with a 2-years window analysis extension was used between 2013 and 2018. The analysis was completed with a determination of the sources of productivity changes (between the first and last year of the study period) and factors that influence efficiency.FindingsEfficient regions have been identified and the spatial diversity in … Show more

“…Various sustainability performance assessment frameworks have been developed in numerous studies; however, little attention has been paid to the healthcare industry and to hospitals in particular (Hussain et al, 2018). The evaluation of sustainability performance in hospitals is still in its infancy, and the majority of the research carried out in this field focuses on specific areas, such as environmental performance, service quality, patient satisfaction, cost management, productivity and efficiency (Ansari et al, 2019;Blass et al, 2017;Miszczynska and Miszczy nski, 2022;Pasqualini et al, 2016;Sumaedi et al, 2016a, b). For example, Pink et al (2001) have considered hospital performance evaluation from four perspectives: patient satisfaction, clinical utilization and outcomes, financial performance, and system integration and change.…”

“…Windows for the three-year window-DEA application (Muhammad, Ra & Farooq, 2018) The main advantage of the approach with this method is the successful treatment of small samples of data and the examination of trends in efficiency change in different time periods (Ohe & Peypoch, 2016). The method serves to assess technical efficiency in individual regions, allowing quantification of regional disparities, but also allows comparison of results from year to year (Miszczynska, & Miszczyński, 2021). Window DEA has been widely used in the study of changing hospital efficiency.…”
