Mechanical and functional properties of composites based on graphite and carboxylated acrylonitrile butadiene rubber

Abstract: In this study, carboxylated acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (xNBR)/expanded graphite (EG) nanocomposites were prepared with a latex compounding technique by ultrasonic stirring. The dispersion of EG in the xNBR matrix was investigated with transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis. EG could be exfoliated into lots of nanosheets dispersing in the xNBR matrix. More EG loading resulted in the presence of a few incompletely exfoliated agglomerates. The mechanical… Show more

“…Few researchers have studied the effect of graphite and modified graphite on the mechanical properties of different elastomers. Yang et al investigated the reinforcing effect of EG on the mechanical properties of xNBR and found a significant improvement in the mechanical properties of the composites. Ismail and Khalaf studied the effect of graphite on the mechanical properties of SBR vulcanizates and observed that increasing the graphite content in SBR matrix, tensile strength of the composites was further improved.…”

“…EG has been introduced to a variety of rubbers, including acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) , silicone rubber (SR) , fluoroelastomer (FEM) , styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) , natural rubber (NR) , carboxylated acylonitrile rubber (CNBR) , and acrylate elastomer (ACM) . The as‐prepared rubber/EG composites have exhibited substantial improvement in mechanical properties, wear resistance, electrical conductivity, and barrier properties.…”

“…The unexfoliated agglomerates resulted in more stress concentration, and that led to reduced tensile strength. 29 The strong interaction between the polymer matrix and the filler was reflected in the modulus results (Figure 9(c)). The modulus ( M 100 ) value increased with the filler content.…”
