Mechanical and Physical Properties of Straw Bales

Abstract: Straw bales can be used as a relatively cheap and ecological building material for buildings. Design of straw buildings is currently based on empirical knowledge although it would be very helpful to have more information about material properties for designing and realization of straw bales houses. Article discuses load - deformation behavior of straw bales in laboratory conditions and evaluate the modulus of elasticity of local straw bales. Deformation characteristics of straw bales can be very useful for the… Show more

“…The difference between straw and other conventional materials is related to its porosity and cellulose content which improve their thermal properties. Regarding mechanical properties, Konečný et al [41] and Ashour et al [42] conducted tests on several types of straw bales by applying a 10 kN load. They got elastic modulus between 150 and 350 kPa for density values between 83 kg/m 3 and 100 kg/m 3 which is very low compared to those of concrete of about 10-30 GPa [43].…”

“…There have been attempts to numerically model straw structures using a simplified view based on empirical relationships and a phenomenological approach [25,30]. Therefore, it is necessary to thoroughly investigate the possibility of testing straw bale as the first type of load-bearing structure of houses [34], then evaluate the data obtained, analyse them using regression analysis, and use inverse analysis and numerical models to obtain unmeasurable parameters. The present research investigated two limiting testing situations-straw bale without side barrier and straw bale with side barrier.…”
