Mechanism of inflammatory response in associated comorbidities in COVID-19

Abstract: Background and aims: The outbreak of the new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, causes a respiratory disease and individuals with pre-existing cardiometabolic disorders display worse prognosis through the infection course. The aim of this minireview is to present epidemiological data related to metabolic comorbidities in association with the SARS-CoV-2. “…96 In the United States, at least 25% of patients who die from COVID-19 have obesity, which is similar to the reported rates of cardiovascular disease in the same high-risk group (21%). 97 It is necessary to study the relationship between obesity and the severity of the COVID-19 disease. Adipose tissue can serve as a reservoir for the spread of SARS-CoV-2, virus clearance, and systemic immune activation.…”

“…Vitamin D enhances the innate immune response while, paradoxically, protecting against excessive inflammation by suppressing TNFα and the cytokines (e.g., IL-6, IL-17) implicated in severe COVID-19, and elevating anti-inflammatory IL-10 (19,28,31,33,45,91,149,(160)(161)(162)(163)(164)(165)(166)(167)(168)(169). Many of the articles referenced here include detailed descriptions of the role of vitamin D in preventing a "cytokine storm" and several authors, including Meftahi et al, and Biesalski, added a series of cartoons to their papers to simplify the concept (167,168).…”

“…COVID-19 can affect the neurological system and cause multiple organ failure such as kidney failure. In addition, pre-existing comorbidities such as heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, respiratory disorders, and cancers increase the severity of COVID-19 in patients (25,26).…”
