Mechanoresponsive, proteolytically stable and biocompatible supergelators from ultra short enantiomeric peptides with sustained drug release propensity

Abstract: This report describes the discovery of a set of decanoic acid based amphiphilic derivatives that serves as a template for the stabilization of hydrogel nanoparticles for the sustained release of model drugs.

“…The dose-dependent cell viability experiments by the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay in the HEK 293 (human embryonic kidney cell) cell line were conducted by incubating the latter for 48 h as shown in Figure A and Table S3 . The IC 50 values of Hydrogelators I – IV were found to be 252.2, 281.9, 242.2, and 296.4 μg/mL, respectively, which were considered to be safe for biomedical applications. , Also, the hydrogelators showed negligible hemolysis at MIC for all of the microorganisms.…”

“…71 On the other hand, due to the syneresis, it was difficult to determine accurately the T gel (temperature above which the gel material lost its structural integrity). For these gels, this volume phase-transition is thermally responsive, and thus, it could be related with potential applications in future investigations, such as in the development of drug delivery systems, 72 sensors, 73 or for the removal of waste contaminants. 74 Morphological and Structural Characterization of the Gels.…”
