Mediatization and the ‘molding force’ of the media

Abstract: The aim of this article is to contribute to the discussion surrounding mediatization by presenting some arguments on how we could include questions of media specificity in an appropriate way. The core argument is that we have to do this by integrating 'media specificity' into a theory of communicative practice or action. In doing so, we can grasp media in their institutional and technological sense as 'molding force' of communicative action and research them empirically as part of mediatization processes.

“…Hepp's (2012) conceptualisation of mediatisation as processes of 'moulding' is in turn embedded in Jansson's (2014Jansson's ( , 2015bJansson's ( , 2018 critical media indispensability approach to mediatisation, which understands mediatisation as 'a movement through which media technologies and related artefacts become necessary for carrying out practices that are essential to the maintenance of society in its various parts, and places and practices become materially adapted to the existence of media' (Jansson, 2014, p. 275). However, as Jansson (2014) points out, media technologies do not become indispensable unless they get meaningfully integrated in life at large.…”

“…The term mediatization describes the co-articulation of social and cultural changes on the one hand and changes in media and communication on the other (see Hepp, 2012). In our media-saturated societies, the proliferation of technology leads to a situation in which most people and organizations use e-mail, radio, TV, the internet, chat, and mobile phones daily without even realizing the high intensity of their technologically driven existence.…”
