OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the awareness of medical emergencies among dental practitioners, to assess the degree of expertise and readiness of dental professionals to handle medical crises in their dental practices and to ascertain if medical emergency medications are offered in dental offices. METHODOLOGY: A prospective study including 208 practitioners were given access to the survey through Google Form, along with information on the study and a consent form .The questionnaire consisted of demographic details, years of experience, and specialty of practitioners and 20 closed-ended questions with 10 assessing knowledge and rest evaluating the competence and preparedness to handle medical emergencies. An emergency whether medical or dental is a serious, acute, and unexpected event that requires a quick and timely intervention. Since some diseases and their treatments increase the likelihood of a medical emergency during dental treatment. The most often encountered medical emergencies in a dental office are vasovagal syncope, angina pectoris, hypoglycemia, and hypertensive crisis. One of the mainstays of prevention of medical emergencies is by taking a thorough and detailed history, and vital signs monitoring and modifying the treatment plan. RESULTS: A response rate of 96% was achieved by including all 200 of the study’s 450 dental professionals. Just 69% of the participants had emergency kits on hand, even though roughly 77.5% of the dentists in the study felt confident in their ability to handle emergencies in the dental office. CONCLUSION: In this study, dental professionals demonstrated a moderate level of understanding in medical situations, and many of them have low to moderate perceived competency in managing medical emergencies. Every dental clinic should have well-communicated emergency protocols in place that should be updated periodically. Background: The landscape of dental education has historically emphasized clinical expertise and patient care. However, the evolving healthcare environment necessitates a broader skill set for dental professionals, including business management capabilities. The integration of business management components into the dental curriculum has emerged as a pivotal area of focus, reflecting the need for dental practitioners to navigate the complexities of establishing and managing successful dental practices. Objective: This study aimed to explore the opinions of postgraduates and dental graduates from Abbasi Shaheed Hospital regarding the inclusion of business management in the dental curriculum, assessing their perceptions of its necessity and impact on their professional readiness. Methods: A cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study was conducted from December 2023 to January 2024 at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. A purposive sampling technique was employed to select participants, including final year graduates, house officers, and postgraduate trainees, with a total of 183 respondents. The questionnaire, developed after a comprehensive literature review, comprised close-ended questions divided into three sections: demographic information, knowledge regarding opening and registration of new dental setups, and perceptions regarding business management. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 25. Results: The mean age of participants was 28.44±6.03 years, with a predominance of female respondents (72.1%). A significant proportion of participants (67.2%) were only slightly aware of the requirements for setting up a dental practice, and 50.8% were not aware at all of the procedure to register their practice in Pakistan. Regarding the inclusion of dental business management in the curriculum, 59% strongly agreed, and 31.1% agreed. Financial and business management skills were identified as primary barriers to starting a new dental practice. Conclusion: The findings highlight a strong consensus among dental professionals at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital on the need for integrating business management training into the dental curriculum. Such integration is crucial for preparing graduates to meet the challenges of modern dental practice, underscoring the importance of a comprehensive educational approach that includes both clinical and business management skills.

Background: Serious medical emergencies in dental practices are generally rare (one in 3-5 years) but if it happens it is life threatening to the patient. Adequate knowledge and competency, training of the dental practitioners is necessary to avoid such life-threatening conditions. The study was conducted to assess the preparedness of medical emergencies among postgraduate dental students of Nepal. Methods: An online questionnaire based cross-sectional study was conducted among all post graduate dental students from all the dental colleges of Nepal. Pretested, validated, close ended questionnaire was used. Questionnaire consisted of twenty medical emergency situations and five questions regarding self-evaluation of training regarding the management of medical emergencies. Chi-square test was used to assess association between competency in managing medical emergency situations and years of academic experience during post-graduation. P- value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: More than 70% participants answered correct management of medical emergency situations. Almost 20% disagreed and 20% don’t know about the management of such situations. Only 28% received training in the management of medical emergencies during undergraduate dental program. More than 50% were moderately satisfied with their knowledge about medical emergencies. Conclusions: The results of the study showed that knowledge to handle commonly occurring medical emergencies was higher. Most of the participants did not attend any training regarding medical emergencies. And those who attended felt there is need for further training in the management of emergency medical cases in the dental chair.
