Medicinal Plants and Phenolic Compounds

Abstract: Medicinal plants were shown to play a significant role in curing many diseases of ancient times. The plant kingdom is truly a goldmine of potential drug compounds. Several earlier reviews and research studies summarized that the products from natural sources have contributed significantly to the discovery of drugs and health benefits for people. Moreover, it is believed that natural products are less deadly than synthetic medicines because of their plant origins. Medicinal plants are significant in the role of… Show more

“…The high‐hydroxycinnamic acid content in BPA is because hydroxycinnamic acid is associated with the cell wall of the cereal via esterification to both polysaccharides and lignin (Shahidi & Yeo, 2016). Hence alkaline hydrolysis coupled with acidification liberate the bound hydroxycinnamic acid, while free hydroxycinnamic acid is only found in the vacuole of cell (Asma, 2022).…”

“…There has been a lot of progress in understanding how phytochemicals can reduce weight, according to a number of lines of evidence. One of the main categories of plant secondary metabolites is polyphenols, which are abundantly present in medicinal plants as well as in fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes [ 73 ]. Their anti-obesity abilities have been repeatedly demonstrated in cell culture, animal, and clinical research.…”

“…The most important role of these substances is that of plant adaptation in stressful conditions, such as damages, infections, or exposure to UV radiation, but they also may have secondary roles such as involving color, aroma, taste, etc. [ 128 , 132 , 135 ]. The presence of PC in the diet and in medical treatments is recognized in the prevention of many human diseases.…”
