Medicinal significance of naturally occurring cyclotetrapeptides

Abstract: Bioactive natural products are serendipitous drug candidates, which stimulate synthetic approaches for improving and supporting drug discovery and development. Therefore, the search for bioactive metabolites from different natural sources continues to play an important role in fashioning new medicinal agents. Several cyclic peptides were produced by organisms, such as b-defensins, gramicidin S, and tyrocidine A, and exhibited a wide range of bioactivities, such as antiviral activity against HIV-1, influenza A … Show more

“…Cyclic peptide nanoparticles and nanotubes have great potential for a wide range of biomedical applications [ 13 , 14 , 15 ]. Naturally occurring cyclic peptides have been isolated from plants [ 16 ], fungi [ 17 , 18 ], bacteria (including actinomycetes) [ 19 , 20 , 21 ], sponges [ 22 ], algae [ 23 , 24 ], and mammals [ 25 ].…”

“…Moreover, numerous species of endophytic fungi have afforded a number of anticancer, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, insecticidal, and immunosuppressive compounds (Schneider et al, 2008 ). Interesting cyclotetrapeptides were isolated recently from endophytic fungi and bacteria (Abdalla, 2016 , 2017 ).…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5][6] Therefore, the development of original cyclopeptide-based therapeutics is currently a growing interest. Some of them like the wellknown vancomycin and its derivatives, [6,7] gramicidin, [8,9] colistin, [10] octreotide, [11] and RGD (Arg-Gly-Asp) derivatives [12,13] exhibit useful biological properties as antibiotics, anticancer drugs and integrin inhibitors. Cyclic peptides also proved to be useful for the design of functional nanotubes from selfassembly.…”
