Medición de la actividad económica en las principales zonas turísticas de playa en México a través de la luminosidad fotografiada desde el espacio

Abstract: Based on satellite photos of night light from NASA and the U.S. Department of Defense, and using the methodology proposed by Henderson, Storeygard and Weil (2012), this paper measures the economic growth of the main 15 beach tourist areas in Mexico for the period from 1993 to 2017. This methodology opens a new series of opportunities to measure economic activity, by providing new tools for measurement at the regional level, regardless of administrative boundaries.

“…En este trabajo se identifican los clubes de convergencia para las 74 zonas metropolitanas de México, utilizando la metodología propuesta por Phillips y Sul (2009). Debido a la falta de información oficial a un nivel de área metropolitana, se propone el ILpc como variable proxy para medir la actividad económica, el cual ha sido utilizado por diversos autores (Ghosh et al, 2009y Llamosas et al, 2018. Tras extraer y trabajar con la información lumínica disponible públicamente a través del portal del NOAA, se construyó el ILpc desde 1992 a 2015 para las 74 zonas metropolitanas de México.…”

“…La utilización del IL se debe a la falta de datos oficiales de producción municipal. Este índice presenta dos características sumamente atractivas: i) la versatilidad en cuanto a la delimitación geográfica, pues permite el acceso a datos de las diversas zonas metropolitanas en todo el territorio nacional (Llamosas, Rangel y Sandoval, 2018); y ii) la precisión en la medición de la actividad económica real, ya que no excluye la actividad económica informal (Ghosh et al, 2009) y minimiza el efecto de las rentas extraordinarias petroleras en entidades como Campeche y Tabasco 1 . Finalmente, los resultados sugieren que en el 50% de las entidades federativas la dinámica de convergencia económica es heterogénea al interior, por lo que resulta relevante el estudio a nivel de zonas metropolitanas.…”
