Mediterranean diet and lung function, sensitization, and asthma at school age: The PARIS cohort

Abstract: Background:The Mediterranean diet (MD) has known health benefits, but its specific impact on allergy development is unclear. As part of the PARIS birth cohort followup, we aimed to investigate the adherence of 8-year-old children to the MD and its association with allergic/respiratory morbidity at school age. Methods: Diet was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire completed by the parents. Adherence to the MD was assessed based on two scores: the KIDMED index and the Mediterranean Diet Score (MDS). Curr… Show more

“…[20][21][22] Results from a recent birth cohort study in children originating from Paris reported a protective association of MedDiet not only to allergic morbidity but also to the lung function, as demonstrated through improved spirometry, in children aged eight. 23 However, there are studies which have not replicated the favorable association between MedDiet and atopic disease prevalence. For example, in a case-control study of 287 asthmatic Peruvian children, adolescents aged 9-19 years, and 96 nonasthmatic counterparts, no association was observed between MedDiet and allergic sensitization.…”

“…Examining Spanish children, Garcia-Marcos et al revealed that obesity was a risk factor of current severe asthma in girls aged 6 and 7, and the Mediterranean diet may have a protective effect on it [ 53 ]. In French school-aged children from a PARIS birth cohort, high adherence to a Mediterranean diet was connected with lower asthma morbidity and sensitization and also with higher FEV1 and FVC in patients [ 54 ]. However, there are also some studies not confirming the positive relation between a Mediterranean diet and asthma prevention [ 55 ].…”

“…Western-style type (WD) is primarily characterized by high content of animal proteins, fat and refined carbohydrates, which are strongly associated with elevated risks of diseases by promoting body weight gain and changes in energy metabolism and immune system activation ( 3 , 4 ). In addition, WD has been implicated with negative outcomes on the airway inflammation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) ( 5 ). On the other hand, plant-based diets, which are enriched in dietary fibers (DFs), are known to beneficially modulate energy metabolism, systemic immunity and microbiota composition, thus contributing to disease prevention ( 6 , 7 ).…”

“…A diet based on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains was shown to mitigate the inflammatory responses in COPD ( 5 ). Furthermore, low fiber diets are associated with reduced diversity of the intestinal microbiota and an imbalanced ratio of metabolites produced by these microorganisms, a process known as dysbiosis, which is involved in the genesis of several pathologies including respiratory diseases ( 7 , 10 ).…”
