Medium Access Control for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Based Mission Critical Wireless Sensor Networks in 3D Monitoring Networks

Abstract: In this paper, a novel medium access control (MAC) layer protocol is introduced for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based mission critical wireless sensor networks (MC-WSN), which is an important application of mission critical sensor and sensor networks (MC-SSN). The UAVs hovering in the threedimensional monitoring networks are distributed in subsets according to their distance from the center station. UAVs in the same subset are contending for access and transmission, while each subset is allotted a slot based… Show more

“…Low latency is very important when a huge amount of data is delivered with limited delay. In time- and mission-critical applications, it is very crucial to achieve low latency during data transmission [ 55 ]. It is because severe damage to the organization or personnel can occur if the delay is quite long.…”

“…A hybrid protocol that partially adopts the beacon-based IEEE 802.15.4 MAC DR/CDT mechanisms is proposed in [ 34 ]. Recently, MAC for UAV-based mission-critical WSNs is proposed in [ 35 ]. The authors have focused on designing MAC for efficient communication and coordination between UAVs employed in a mission.…”

“…UAVs help in performing time-sensitive tasks [ 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 ], monitoring emergencies [ 12 ], saving energy of WSN [ 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ], extending the lifetime of WSN network [ 14 , 18 ], connecting separate nodes and networks [ 12 , 19 ], and enabling data aggregation [ 17 , 20 ]. Measures such as optimizing the flight routes [ 9 , 12 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 19 ] and locations [ 15 , 19 , 21 ] of UAVs, designing clustering mechanisms [ 17 , 18 , 22 ], media access control mechanisms [ 10 , 18 , 23 , 24 ], and sleeping schedules of WSN [ 14 ] and the like have been adopted to achieve these targets. Assisting in locating the WSN nodes [ 25 , 26 , 27 ].…”
