Melatonin Attenuates Myocardial Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury by Inhibiting Autophagy Via an AMPK/mTOR Signaling Pathway

Abstract: Background/Aims: Melatonin has been demonstrated to protect cardiac microvascular endothelial cells (CMECs) against ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI). Autophagy plays different roles in the heart during ischemia and reperfusion. The AMP activated protein kinase/mammalian target of rapamycin (AMPK/mTOR) pathway is associated with autophagy. This study sought to explore whether melatonin regulates CMEC autophagy through the AMPK/mTOR signaling pathway. Methods: The effects of melatonin in IRI were investigated i… Show more

“…As a key cellular energy sensor, AMPK plays an important role in activating autophagy by inhibiting the activity of mTOR [32]. In addition to initiating autophagy, AMPK also plays an important role in the late stages of autophagy.…”

“…Metformin was shown to inhibit beta-glycerophosphate-(β-GP-) induced impairment of mitochondrial biogenesis via AMPK activation in VC [6]. Melatonin, the main indoleamine produced by the pineal gland, is known to have anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and antioxidant activities [11]. Treatment with melatonin inhibited mitochondrial fission but promoted the fusion process in diabetic retina [12].…”

“…Therefore, it is especially important to explore the internal mechanism of cervical cancer and find new therapeutic targets. Up to now, some noncoding RNA (ncRNA) have been proved to be involved in the biological process of cervical cancer, such as circ‐000284, circRNA8924, long ncRNA HOTAIR and HOXA11 (W.R. Chen et al, ; Kim et al, ; J. Liu, Wang, Long, Liu, & Li, ; Zhang, Cheng, Liang, & Jin, ). Although the specific pathogenesis of cervical cancer is still unclear, the progress of these studies is directly related to the diagnosis and treatment of cervical cancer and is of great significance to the recovery of patients.…”
