This research aims to find a sociological understanding of the Mother Earth myth in the Sundanese tradition in West Java, Indonesia. Based on an intercultural approach in philosophy, researchers combine cross-disciplinary analysis, namely philosophy, sociology and anthropology. This combination of interdisciplinary studies complements methods of interpreting texts and contexts regarding cognitive understanding, especially the principles of reasoning about meaningful worldviews in everyday life. The results of this interpretation are principles of reasoning or logic called functional logic. This argument about the logic of function starts from two layers of interpretation of two elements in the culture of agrarian society. The first element is the mythology of the Paddy Goddess, and the second element is the mythical figure of the Paddy Goddess, which is the main symbol in the description of rice cultivation. These two elements contain an understanding of the paradoxical relationship between two aspects that combine with each other in the management and structuring of the agricultural world. These two aspects are found in parental culture: father and mother. This study presents the interpretation of the text and context of the mythology and symbols of the Paddy Goddess and the practice of rice cultivation. Interpretation of mythology, the symbol of Paddy Goddess and rice cultivation requires a synchronic approach and emic analysis to conclude the implied meaning, namely the principle of function as the core meaning implied in the mythology of Paddy Goddess and Rice cultivation. This interpretation shows that logic functions as the main principle of reasoning that combines various cultural elements into a logical and meaningful 'way of seeing' the life world, which influences Sundanese people consciously or not in experiencing their culture in a logical and meaningful way.

Indonesia harbors diverse oral traditions, with a particular focus on Javanese traditions. Studies on oral traditions, especially those related to geguritan (poems), stories, and songs, often lean towards aesthetic analyses. However, there remains untapped potential for exploration, such as the exploration of local cultural elements underlying the contradictions in folklore. This article aims to elucidate these contradictions and delineate the paradigmatic concept of “anak polah bapa kepradhah” within the narrative of “Murwakala.” Conducted as a descriptive-qualitative study, this research employs Lévi-Strauss structuralism as a framework for interpreting, mapping and attributing meaning to empirical paradigms embedded in societal concepts. The objective is to address the contradictions and logical patterns inherent in society. Data for this study are derived from the observation of Javanese oral traditions related to wong sukerta. These observations are then juxtaposed with the narrative of “Murwakala,” as presented in the wayang performance of the ruwatan tradition, with a specific focus on the Javanese “anak polah bapa kepradhah” concept/value. The depth of meaning is further explored through the use of tables and diagrams. From a Lévi-Straussian perspective, it can be concluded that “Murwakala” and its associated value concept serve as logical tools capable of mapping paradigms, deciphering empirical contradictions (related to family relationships and power), and representing these dynamics in the cultural products and thoughts of Javanese society, both historically and in the contemporary context.

This research examines the identity of the Sundanese people contained in the Ciung Wanara (CW) myth. The research method uses the Levi-Strauss structuralism approach, which is assumed to be able to interpret myths comprehensively through innate discoveries which are the meeting point between surface and deep structure. The stages of research were carried out in several locations, namely (1) the search for Ciung Wanara data was divided into episodes and units; (2) synchronous and diachronic series were made to find the surface structure; (3) looking for a deep structure with a binary opposition path; and (4) innate discovery. The results showed that there were 17 episodes and 49 units. From the synchronic and diachronic tables for my theme, five triangular patterns were found, namely the queen's triangle pattern, the Supreme triangle pattern, the parents' triangle pattern, the life triangle pattern, the natural triangle pattern, and also found the Sundanese political triad. The most dominant pattern is contained in the Ciung Wanara myth, namely the triangular way of life, patterns of thinking, patterns of behavior, and patterns of action which are the identity of the Sundanese people and the application of the triad of Sundanese Politica (silih asih, silih asah, and silih asuh). AbstrakPenelitian ini mengkaji jati diri orang Sunda yang terdapat dalam mitos Ciung Wanara (CW). Penelitian menunjukkan model logis orang Sunda mengatasi konflik atau kontradiksi yang terjadi di antara mereka. Metode penelitian menggunakan pendekatan strukturalisme Levi-Strauss yang diasumsikan dapat memaknai mitos secara komprehensif melalui penemuan innate yang merupakan titik temu antara surface dan deep structure. Tahapan penelitiannya, yaitu (1) pencarian data CW dibagi dalam episode dan unit; (2) dibuat deret sinkronis dan diakronis untuk menemukan surface structure; (3) dicari deep structure dengan jalan oposisi biner; dan (4) penemuan innate. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat 17 episode dan 49 unit. Dari hasil penyusunan tabel sinkronis dan diakronis untuk mytheme ditemukan lima pola segitiga, yaitu pola segitiga permaisuri, pola segitiga Mahatinggi, pola segitiga orang tua, pola segitiga kehidupan, pola segitiga alam, dan ditemukan pula trias politika Sunda. Pola yang paling dominan terdapat dalam mitos CW, yaitu pola segitiga kehidupan, pola berpikir, pola bersikap, dan pola bertindak yang menjadi kekhasan jati diri orang Sunda, serta penerapan dari trias politika Sunda (silih asih, silih asah, dan silih asuh).
