Memantine Prevents Cardiomyocytes Nuclear Size Reduction in the Left Ventricle of Rats Exposed to Cold Stress

Abstract: OBJECTIVESMemantine is an N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) glutamate receptor antagonist used to treat Alzheimer’s disease. Previous studies have suggested that receptor blockers act as neuroprotective agents; however, no study has specifically investigated the impact that these drugs have on the heart. We sought to evaluate the effects of memantine on nuclear size reduction in cardiac cells exposed to cold stress.METHODWe used male EPM-Wistar rats (n=40) divided into 4 groups: 1) Matched control (CON); 2) Memantin… Show more

“…Acute cold exposure also stimulates shivering thermogenesis in skeletal muscle to defend body temperature ( 12 ). Maintenance of body temperature upon acute exposure to cold depletes glycogen in the liver and is a high energy-consuming process ( 27,28 ). Thus, cold exposure challenges the cardiovascular system because of the high demand of energy supply for thermogenesis in BAT and skeletal muscle.…”

“…Besides cardiac hypertrophy observed in stress models and in spontaneous hypertensive rats (SHR) (Cenko et al 2004;Meneghini et al 2008;Daud et al 2009;Ferreira et al 2009;Meneghini et al 2009), baroreflex is also impaired in this strain (Valenti et al 2009a). Hence, this strain is already at a higher risk due to their baroreflex impairment (Valenti et al 2009a).…”

“…Concordance of measurements performed by the three investigators was evaluated and analyzed by * Bartko's intra-class correlation coefficient according to Fleiss guidelines [20], which was validated in previous studies [7,9,15,16] (p < 0.05, level of significance).…”
